Ashley Dyer: up-and-coming fashionista

Heads up, Australia: Ashley’s about to show you what she’s got!

Capture Imaging recently had a chance to meet this vibrant young lady when she came in for her portrait photography package. At 16 years old, this Tafe fashion student has a great sense of who she is and what she wants out of life–from the path she wants to take to her career in fashion superstardom, and everything else in-between.

High school electives set Ashley on her course to trend-setting

Her interest in fashion started when she was very young, when she started attaching scraps of material left over from her mother’s sewing onto Barbie dolls. As she got older, Ashley eventually started drawing clothes in many different styles. In year 9 and 10 electives, she picked costume design even if it wasn’t actually a course that was run in her school.

“One day I was listening to a music show and an advertisement on the Apex Australian Teen Fashion Awards (AATFA), a high school-based competition, was put out. Although my school did not have a sewing course at the time, I decided I wanted to enter anyway.”

She drew a design she liked (tuxedo dress) then set about working out how to create it. Eight mock tops later, she had finally found a design that worked. She was guided by her mom and grandmother but all work had to be done by Ashley.

Coming from a long line of creativity

Busy young lady gears up for a bright future

She made it to the state finals in 2010 with that dress and she has kept going at it since then. Last year, she entered eight outfits and made it into the NSW/ACT state finals. This year, she entered the Australian Wool Fashion Awards for the first time, and was selected to have her dress in the national finals at Armidale in March.

She is currently in the process of completing approximately 10 outfits she is entering into the AATFA 2012 in September. Ashley also has a formal dress to compete that was requested by a fashion photographer and will be starting to sketch out her entries for next year’s TAWFA.

Talent, drive and contacts will help make her dreams come true

With all the contests she’s entered, Ashley feels lucky to have made contacts that have offered to help her. She is currently completing Certificate 1 in Fashion Design and Technology, a t-vet course of two years for which she will complete Certificate 2 in 2013. After high school, she will be going to Tighes Hill Tafe to complete Applied Fashion Design Certificate 3 and 4 over the course of two years.

“My plans are to apply to the Fashion Business Institute (FBI) for my diploma of Fashion Business and a Statement of Attainment in Fashion Design and Industry Practices. During these years, I plan on entering AATFA and TAWFA, and when I leave high school, I will enter Frock in Newcastle. My entry into the TAWFA is currently touring around Australia with all national finalist outfits; it will be in nearly 70 parades and travel for over six months.”

"It's ok to be me."

Katy Perry-inspired, down to the color of her hair

“I love color, making things out of unconventional items or scraps. I love Katy Perry, who loves experimenting as much as I do, and people who are not afraid to be who they are.”

Just in a short period of time since the first day that Ashley stepped into the Capture Imaging studio, we’ve seen this young lady model hair colors from red to blue, to teal green (no pictures of those, unfortunately).

“It’s taken me a long time to realize it’s ok to be me.”
